Dear Arts Advocate,
At 5:10 pm EDT today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Obey-Lowey-Leach floor amendment to restore $100 million to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Thank you for participating in this successful advocacy campaign to insure Americans have full access to the quality television and radio programming provided by our nation’s local public broadcasting stations. Many of the speakers in today’s debate referenced the flood of messages that they had received from constituents.
Following heated debate over the merits of CPB, the amendment passed convincingly by a vote of 284 to 140. Of note, 100 percent of House Democrats voted for the amendment and an impressive 38 percent of House Republicans voted for it as well, representing 87 GOP members. Please visit our E-Advocacy Center to see how your Representative voted on this amendment. You'll also have the opportunity to send a e-mail of thanks to “yes” voters or an e-mail of disappointment to “no” voters of the amendment.
Once the House completes debate over other aspects of this appropriations bill, it will be sent to the Senate, where we do not anticipate any major threats to CPB funding, but we will keep you posted.
Again, thank you for your commitment to the arts and public broadcasting.
