MetLife Foundation National Arts Forum Series

2005–2006 Series: The Transforming Arts Landscape: Cutting-Edge Strategies That Target the Private Sector

Read individual forum synopses from the 20052006 series.

This national program explored pressing issues facing arts organizations in ten cities around the nation. In this Forum, partner organizations addressed how arts organizations can best deal with both the dramatic and subtle shifts American demographics and the challenging global and domestic economic climate. Two Forums took place in each of the following cities between April 2005 and May 2006: Atlanta; Boston; Charlotte, NC; Chicago; Denver; Hartford, CT; Houston; Miami; New York City; Oklahoma City, OK; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Pittsburgh; Portland; Providence, RI; San Francisco; St. Louis, MO; Tampa Bay, FL; and Washington, DC.

Key topics that were explored in this series include:

  • Baby boomers are entering retirement in record numbers, leaving leadership positions in business and the community.
  • Generation X is moving into leadership positions in corporations. As the giving community becomes more diverse, so do generation gaps become more palpable and funders become increasingly focused on agendas more relevant to their own generational issues and concerns.
  • As corporate philanthropy continues to change, we need to explore how some communities have been effective at moving beyond direct corporate giving.

This program was made possible through generous support from MetLife Foundation.
