Topic: Arts and Social Development: Religion and Spirituality
The arts and religion both have long-standing traditions of discipline and creativity, and both make important contributions to the well-being of their communities. Yet the relationship between the two often seems contentious rather than connected. Community leaders in both arenas are exploring new ways to work closely together.
Strong connections between the arts and religion already exist. Many congregations integrate the arts into the fabric of their worship—through music and performances during services, the design of ritual spaces, and the display of works of art. The artistic process itself is seen by many as a spiritual experience, affecting both the artist and his or her audience. In addition, many view congregations as safe places where the culture of national and ethnic groups can be respected and preserved.
Partners is the only national, non-sectarian, nonprofit organization devoted to helping congregations and their communities sustain and actively use older and historic sacred places.
The Henry R. Luce Initiative on Religion and International Affairs, announced in June 2005, seeks to deepen understanding of religion as a critical but often neglected dimension of national and international policies and politics.
