Cindy Sherman

Named one of the most influential artists of the 20th century by ARTnews magazine, American photographer Cindy Sherman continues to reinvent herself and her art to high acclaim. Ms. Sherman’s work draws deftly from pop culture with provocative images centering on herself as subject in scenarios ranging from jarring to poetic. Stereotypical characters in seemingly familiar settings formed her first series, Untitled Film Stills; the collection, taken between 1978 and 1980, became one of the most highly sought-after objects in the field and established Ms. Sherman as a great talent of her time. In 1996, this landmark body of work was preserved in its entirety when acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant, Ms. Sherman’s images have been featured at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and included in some of the world’s most prestigious permanent collections of modern art, New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and London’s Tate Gallery among them.
